Review of the DELL Inspiron E1505

This is a review of the laptop, DELL Inspiron, E1505.  This is obviously a biased review, since this is a laptop computer which I have owned for many years.

First I’d like to say I’ve owned a couple of laptops, non Dell, before the Dell Inspiron and I would have to say that Dell machines are the best.  Why are they the best?  Because of the stellar service I received.  I would have to say that the customer satisfaction is very high. Read on and I’ll tell you more.

If you think about it, what I’m talking about here is the stellar service you get after you purchase your Brand New laptop.  I’ve owned a Dell Inspiron for over 3 years.  Talk about an awesome laptop!

The really awesome thing about it, is when I had something break.  A good example is the DVD writer when out on it, where it was writing half the data and ruining the DVD.  Dell sent out an immediate replacement.

They also had to replace the motherboard in it because my internal card reader wasn’t working.  They had to do this twice.  You may ask yourself, “What! If that stuff went out why is this laptop so good?”  I’ll tell you why.  Because I called, they tell me they will send someone out, to my house, to replace it.  Later that day, or the next day I get a call from a traveling technician who wants to set up a time to come to my house and replace the broken part on my laptop.  Talk about excellent customer service.

I consider this top service!  I didn’t have to mess with shipping the laptop back and forth as I have with other computer manufaturers.

Ok, we have the service out of the way.  The service is top notch!  I will say one thing.  When you call you will get someone in India answering the phone.  If this person can’t help you in a satisfactory manner, hang up and call again.  It’s amazing the difference in knowledge between people at the end of the same phone number.  That’s all I’m saying about that.  It's possible to get the same great customer service that I have received.

Durability:  I carried this laptop in a backpack back and forth to work for 2 years.  Did it get banged around?  Yes, of course.  Did it ever have a problem?  No, not from that.  It ran and continues to run like a charm to this day.

If you’re looking to purchase a laptop buy it with the OS you want and with the greatest amount of protection you can get.  Why the protection?  I purchased a 4 year technical support and coverage for my computer.  I never regretted it.

I had a friend that didn’t purchase this.  He bought the next step up to the laptop I purchased.  He had it for over 1 year and the monitor went out.  On a laptop you can expect things to break quicker than on a desktop, that’s just the way it is.  With the extra mobility comes extra problems.  A full warranty for as long as you can get it is the best way to go.  My friend was out of luck because he didn’t have the warranty.  A new monitor is going to cost him far more than the 3 year coverage would have cost him up front.  He could have had his monitor replaced for free, with the technician coming to his home to fix the laptop.

When I say make sure you have the OS on the machine that you want when you purchase because you’ll always have trouble with the machine if you put anything else on it.  Unless its Linux, of course.  J

If you’re putting Linux on it then you have to know what you’re doing and you probably won’t run into any unplanned trouble.

I tried to upgrade my laptop to Windows Vista and found a number of software packages that I use no longer working.  I went back to Windows XP and everything has worked great since.  Basically, this laptop was built for XP.  Sure the upgrade should have been easy, and the software should have worked, but I found the laptop slower and less usable under Vista than under XP.  Sure, I’m missing a few bells and whistles, but it works the same as when I purchased it.  Can I ask for anything more than that?  When I want something better I will purchase a new one!  That’s why I say, buy what you want up front.  Get the extra memory, the largest hard drive.  If you do this you won’t have to move up to a new machine as quickly as you would otherwise.

Stay away from old laptops unless you know exactly what you want and know the pitfalls you will run into.  A new laptop, with a full warranty is the absolute best way to go!

The nice thing about a warranty is that they are usually transferable.  Buying one at auction is usually a good idea because you’ll get the warranty that was purchased with the machine and you’ll get it at a greatly discounted price.

Why?  The answer is here at the buying scenario.

If you aren't use to using the mouse on a laptop you may want to get a USB, or wireless mouse to use with you new laptop.  I just got use to the mouse pad because I figured I didn't want to carry around another mouse.  You may feel the same way.  That's the thing about a computer.  There are so many things you can customize for your own use.  I can get a full size keyboard and mouse and plug them in and be more comfortable.  If the monitor isn't enough I have the option of plugging in a full size monitor.  Of course then you always have to contend with the argument, if you're going to do all that you might as well buy a desktop.  Well, that's fine, but all of a sudden I have to have a meeting or on a trip, and I need to take my computer with me.

You have the added bonus of mobility.  You also have the wireless network card so you can still be connected to the network while you're being mobile.  It really doesn't get any nicer than that!

Thanks for reading!
